We manufacture spur and helical gears within the following limits:
- Hobbed tooth form up to approximately 140-inch diameters
- Ground tooth form up to 0.75 DP (3-inch tooth height, 4-inch space width, larger space widths with single flank grinding) and 120-inch outside diameters
- Hobs from 24 to 0.75 DP
- In-house carburizing up to 70-inch diameters by 76 inches high or 30-inch diameters by 92 inches high
- In-house contour induction hardening 4 pitch and coarser to 120-inch diameters
- Our in-house heat treating provides metallurgical properties to AGMA grade 3, the highest AGMA grade, when necessary
- Gear teeth are finished on the latest state-of-the-art form grinders to achieve quality levels to AGMA Q15 (A2)
- In-house shot peening
We are committed to producing the highest quality, most reasonably priced spur and helical gearing in the world. We partner with a select group of material providers to ensure quality is part of the process from the get-go. And with the best, most advanced manufacturing equipment available, we ensure high productivity and minimal manufacturing losses. In addition, our staff is trained in non-destructive testing, magnetic particle inspection, nital etch, and ultrasonic inspection to ensure the highest material qualities.
Material Selection
We stock vacuum degassed bar stock, cast ingot and forged bar up to 31 inches in diameter. We can provide rolled rings and closed die or near net forgings to cost effectively meet your specifications.
Manufacturing Equipment
We have made significant investments in manufacturing equipment that reduces expense while maintaining high quality. Our main shop, which is dedicated to low-volume, critical part production, features CNC turning and grinding equipment that ensures low cost and high quality. In most cases, with our universal fixturing and large selection of hobs, we have everything needed to manufacture a low-volume job before the order is placed.
With five cells – a 24-inch gear cell, two 40-inch gear cells and two pinion cells – we also can efficiently fill high-volume orders. They incorporate turning, drilling and hobbing equipment to convert raw material to finished blanks ready for heat treatment or finished through hardened parts. CNC equipment and dedicated fixturing reduces part change-over time and maximizes productivity.
Heat Treatment
Our state-of-the-art heat treat facility provides grade 3 heat treat. The material properties are certified on a LECO CNC micro-hardness tester. The strict attention to detail required to achieve these quality levels is applied to every heat treat load. Tooth-to-tooth induction hardening also is available. To keep up with increasing quality and production demands, we built our own CNC-controlled induction hardening machine capable of processing 120-inch diameter gears.
Gear Tooth Finishing
We have 15 form grinders, all of which are capable of AGMA Q15 (A2). All of our grinders have on-board inspection to ensure parts are correct before they leave the machine. They also are capable of grinding each flank independently when the gear sees different loads in each direction of rotation. Most of the grinders are capable of point-to-point interpolation, which allows for parabolic profile modifications as well as the more standard linear and circular modifications. The machines are verified regularly with our Zeiss Gear Pro Coordinate Measuring Machine to ensure customers receive charts that accurately depict the micro geometry and quality levels of their parts.
